Organising a children’s birthday party at home does not have to be complicated. With a little preparation and fun activities, you can create a day your child will talk about for a long time.

Start with a good plan
Start about three to four weeks in advance. Choose a date, make a guest list and select activities that suit your child and the available space. Book any outside help or extra supplies you need well in advance.

Activities for different age groups
The same activity can work for different ages. What changes is the explanation, difficulty, duration and amount of adult guidance needed.
5–7
Choose short, clear activities with plenty of variety. Simple games, dancing, bubbles, crafts and imaginative challenges usually work well.
8–10
Add more challenge: team games, creative workshops, quizzes, treasure hunts and small multi-step quests.
11–12
Give children more independence and opportunities to work together. Longer challenges, team tasks, more advanced quests and workshops often suit this age group.

Food, drinks and a plan B
🍎 Simple and child-friendly
Offer small portions of fruit, sandwiches or snacks and plenty of water or juice. A large meal is usually unnecessary.
You can also make food part of the fun, for example with a chocolate-making or sweet-making workshop.
☂️ What if it rains?
Prepare one or two activities that can easily move indoors. In light rain, a party tent may shelter quiet table activities. In heavy rain or strong wind, an entirely indoor programme is the better choice.

Run through these essentials shortly before the party starts. You will have less to organise during the event and more time to enjoy it.

Organising the party yourself can be great fun, especially if you enjoy being fully involved: leading the games, organising activities and keeping an eye on the children.
Want to take part in the fun as a character yourself? You could even hire a mascot costume. If you would rather not run the programme and supervise every activity throughout the party, you can leave that responsibility to an entertainer by booking children’s entertainment at home.
Both approaches can work well. The choice comes down to whether you enjoy leading the celebration yourself or prefer to leave that role to someone else.
